Governor Raises Alarm Over Punjab Industrial Water, Flags Possible Cancer Spike in Rajasthan Border Districts
At the 23rd Cancer Survivors’ Day in Jaipur, Governor Haribhau Bagade raised concerns over polluted water from Punjab allegedly linked to rising cancer cases in Rajasthan’s border districts. The event highlighted calls for stronger environmental action, improved cancer treatment systems, and a long-term vision for a cancer-free Rajasthan with advanced medical support.
Governor Haribhau Bagade expressed deep concern over water flowing from Punjab, stating that it appears potentially harmful. He alleged that chemical waste from industrial units in Punjab may be contaminating the water supply, and suggested that this polluted water could be contributing to an increase in cancer cases in Sri Ganganagar and Hanumangarh districts. The Governor said he had already written a formal letter to the Governor of Punjab, which was further forwarded to a ministerial authority, but no significant action has been taken so far. He expressed hope that corrective measures would be initiated soon.
During his address, Governor Bagade noted that cancer, once widely regarded as a highly dangerous disease, is now seeing improved outcomes due to advanced treatment technologies. He emphasized the need for structured and systematic programs aimed at combating cancer, advocating a long-term vision similar to the “TB-free Rajasthan” initiative, proposing instead a “cancer-free Rajasthan” mission.
Rajasthan Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar described cancer as a silent killer and stated that its treatment represents a form of service to humanity. He underlined that healthcare is a major sector requiring serious attention and said the state government recognizes its importance, highlighting that the sector has received the highest budget allocation.
Mahavir Cancer Hospital and Research Centre Chairman Navratan Kothari stated that the institution functions not merely as a hospital but as a dedicated service center. He particularly praised the work of the hospital’s women’s wing, calling its contributions highly commendable. He further added that efforts are underway to expand and enhance treatment facilities to provide broader and more effective healthcare services.
The event brought together medical professionals, administrators, and survivors, reinforcing the growing emphasis on advanced cancer care, environmental health concerns, and the need for coordinated policy intervention in public health challenges.
